How The Danish Cancer Society creates better user experiences

8 million visits in a year -or 22,000 visits per day. The Danish Cancer Society’s website is widely used by patients, relatives, and healthcare professionals.

The challenge

The organization’s previous website was built on an outdated and complex CMS solution with custom-developed applications and tailored functionalities. Technically and in terms of user experience, it was no longer up to modern standards.

Therefore, the organization needed a more accessible website, especially since seven out of ten users visit cancer.dk from their mobile devices.

The solution

We developed the website with a sharp focus on the four main principles of WCAG: perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust content presentation.

Ensuring accessibility requires that users can navigate the site using only a keyboard or with the support of a screen reader.

Compliance with Web Accessibility Requirements (WCAG 2.1)

WCAG 2.1 stands for Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.

The Danish legislation on web accessibility is based on the WCAG standard, which is built around four core principles. A website must be:

  1. Perceivable
  2. Operable
  3. Understandable
  4. Robust

These four principles are further divided into 13 guidelines, each with specific success criteria used to measure accessibility compliance.

The Danish Cancer Society has set a clear requirement for its new website: it must comply with the legal web accessibility standards known as WCAG 2.1.

As an NGO, the Danish Cancer Society is not legally obligated to meet these standards—currently, only public institutions are required to comply with web accessibility regulations.

Nevertheless, the organization has chosen to adhere to the standard. The goal is to ensure accessibility for those who need it most. Many cancer patients experience visual impairments or reduced functional abilities due to illness or treatment, making accessibility crucial.

By meeting WCAG 2.1, the Danish Cancer Society ensures that its website remains inclusive and user-friendly for all visitors.

We are by far the largest Danish-language website on cancer, with many relevant users who rely on our content. It simply wouldn’t work if people couldn’t access our site due to a disability.

Our approach

The Result

The Danish Cancer Society’s new web platform is a prime example of how technical expertise can be combined with a strong commitment to accessibility, ensuring compliance with the four key principles of WCAG 2.1.

The collaboration has resulted in a series of value-creating initiatives

The new website is more intuitive, featuring a carefully selected color palette that not only enhances aesthetics but also improves accessibility for users with color blindness and other visual impairments.

A responsive design strategy ensures the site is just as easy to navigate on mobile devices as on desktops. Screen reader compatibility was also a priority, making navigation seamless for visually impaired users.

The website is now intuitive and easy to use, helping users quickly familiarize themselves with its features. Consistent navigation structures and design elements reduce confusion and enhance the overall user experience.

Our technical expertise ensured the site functions flawlessly across different browsers and assistive technologies, guaranteeing accessibility for all users.
