Sunclass modernizes business processes with an integration platform

Sunclass Airlines is a Danish charter airline, formerly known as Thomas Cook Airlines. the company has modernized its IT infrastructure through an enterprise integration platform.

The challenge

Sunclass Airlines operates a fleet of 13 aircraft, and its core system platform supports all business processes, including flight planning, travel booking, operations control, contract allotment, crew management, finance, aircraft maintenance, and retail operations.

It is critical that data flows securely between these core systems, as missing or delayed data can lead to operational delays. In aviation, delays can result in penalties and compensation claims if airlines fail to meet their designated slot times.

Modernization for stability

As part of the transition from Thomas Cook Airlines to an independent airline, Sunclass re-established and modernized its entire Flight Ops system platform. Today, more than 25 core systems manage all business-critical operations.

To support this transformation, Sunclass Airlines wanted to modernize its enterprise integration platform using Microsoft Azure Integration Services. This would allow:

The solution

The modernization ensures secure, real-time data exchange between all mission-critical systems required for airline operations.

Additionally, the project led to a major cleanup of Sunclass' IT architecture and system landscape. Today, all business-critical data is securely transferred between core systems via a modern enterprise integration platform built on Microsoft Azure. The use of Azure Cloud provides a scalable integration engine capable of handling both current and future integrations.

Despite an extremely tight deadline, Sunclass Airlines successfully launched the system platform and integrated multiple systems simultaneously.

Behind the solution

The Flight Ops project modernized Sunclass’ integration platform, replacing and integrating with more than 25 core systems and 40 integrations built on 65 Azure components.

The Flight Ops integration platform was deployed across four environments in Microsoft Azure, with DevOps pipelines for automated deployment and preparation for automated testing in future releases.

The integration platform is based on a microservices architecture, hosted in Microsoft Azure. Microsoft Azure DevOps pipelines enable automated deployment and testing, ensuring a robust and scalable infrastructure.

The result

In close collaboration with Sunclass’ own architects, we designed and developed a future-proof integration platform built on Azure components to manage internal and external system integrations.

The next phase of development continues with further upgrades to additional core systems.

When we went live with Flight Ops, everything exceeded expectations. there were no issues. Everything worked exactly as it should. the entire preparation process was solid, and nothing was overlooked. That’s why we succeeded.

The collaboration

Our partnership with Sunclass began in 2018, initially focusing on modernizing their e-commerce platform—Airshoppen.

Following the ownership transition in 2019, we were invited as a trusted advisor to provide architecture and integration guidance and lead the implementation of Flight Ops, the first major project in our collaboration.

We had a close collaboration with Immeo and were part of the Flight Ops project from start to finish. this made it so much easier to manage the solution afterward because we know it in detail and were involved in its development.
